Our main stage has curated culturally apt performers from Southern Africa like the electrifying poet, rapper and afro-centric Sho Madjozi (SA), “The Voice of South Africa”; Vusi Mahlasela (SA), The enchanting indigenous jazz vocalist Thandeka Mfinyongo (SA), the uhadi, mbira, percussive trio Ancient Voices (Lungiswa Plaatjies, Nomapostile Nyiki ft. Kim Masala). Representing the heritage of Zimbabwe, bassist Josh Meck . From the majestc mountainous Kingdom of Lesotho, we’ve showcase Leomile ft. Maleh. South African advocate for World Music; DJ Nicky B, has blessed the decks 2 years in a row. Pilani Bubu performing with National School of The Arts choir and ensemble the repertoire from her album series Folklore. Yeah two we saw her collaboration with the Windybrow Children's Choir for an an experimental set titled ‘Folklore Dlala - Piano’ exploring children’s play songs she sung as a little girl, explored in the format of South African Dance music: Afro-Pop, Amapiano, Afrobeats, House, Gqom ft. Bokanyi Dyer, Siyabonga Mthembu and Simphiwe Tshabalala. From East Africa we hosted artists that fuses the Nyatiti (a genre of music and an 8-stringed instrument called Luo lyre) into modern sounds: Makadem (Kenya) ft. Eddie Grey, a visionary and trailblazer in the Jazz and fusion scene in East and Central Africa.

A a rich line up of musicians, authors, spoken word artists, poets, and storytellers have been added to the programme. We also kept our promise toward inter-generational dialogue by way of edutainment for kids of all ages from 11am – 5pm curated by Knickerbocker Doodle Bag, Logan & Friends with education specialist Dr Jocelyn Logan-Friend, featuring Gcina Mhlophe.

The inaugural Folklore Festival took place at the National School of Arts on Saturday 1st October 2022. This Festival is a celebration of African culture, customs and community and the creative force behind the project is none other than indelible storyteller: Pilani Bubu - A SAMA Award Winning Musician, Television Host, and Multi-Award Winning Creative Entrepreneur, The festival was a diverse Pan-African creative offering from North, South, East and West Africa. Pilani Bubu sat down with Poppy Ntshongwana to unpack the themes within her latest offering: Folklore Chapter 2: Ekuseni. In this fifth episode, they explored, the evolution of Pilani's voice, her versatility, use of language and advocating for the indigenous. They also talk about how they music videos were filmed at the village and location where the music and project themes came to her. "This album explores how the African Child aligns with their purpose and calling in communion and consent with our ancestors. Exploring rites o passages, rituals, gifts and inheritances that begin the journey of manifesting our dreams. African Spirituality is a guide to the continuation of lineage. As a child of the ancestors of dreams (Umntan'eThongo), like most of my visions, this album wrote itself in dreamscapes. I think it was fit, before we continue exploring the next chapters of the Folklore album series, I wanted to share my journey of initiation and becoming in parallel. To bring you into my purpose and how I am working toward my own alignment in the this work as a healer and a teacher who intuits and channels. Whatever that is personal is public they say. It is that part that heals us through revelation and others through resonance.
