More about our Founder & Curator of the Folklore Community
Artist, Custodian, and Visionary. Pilani Bubu, also known as the ‘Indelible Storyteller’ is an unapologetically multi-hyphenated artist, TV presenter, Interior Designer, serial entrepreneur, and the visionary founder and curator of the Folklore Festival. With a 15-year career as a musician and storyteller, she has independently produced and released eight albums, toured more than 25 countries, earning the a few accolades and achievements along the way.The South African Music Awards (SAMA26) for Folklore Chapter 1, the Mzansi Jazz Award (2026) for Nayindaba, Four Synch deals on Netflix for her songs Free, Qula Kwedini, Ufuna Bani, Abantwana on The Polygamist and The Brave Ones. Her artistic & entrepreneurial journey is bolstered by her 20 years of experience in Marketing and Strategic Communications, an expertise she seamlessly integrates into her work in brand strategy and the creative economy. With a two Leories Bronze Awards and two Nominations for her 360 Mixed Media Campaigns under her agency and production house, for clients Nelson Mandela Foundation and Nedbank, she’s made a name for herself both as a strategist and a cultural practitioner.
The Folklore Festival and Community
Following her SAMA win in 2020, Pilani answered a greater call to build a platform dedicated to Pan-African Folk music and African storytelling. Recognising a tendency toward superficial cultural consumption, where traditional music was often deemed "uncool", she established the Folklore Community to address the limited documentation of African folklore and to foster intergenerational dialogue.
Through this initiative, she launched the Folklore Festival, a multi-disciplinary platform designed
to interweave various art forms and elevate folk music and literature onto prominent stages.
Pilani describes the festival as an educational institution disguised as a celebration,
encouraging audiences to accept an offering rooted in the fundamental family structures of
storytelling and sharing.

A Radical Philosophy on Heritage and Healing
Pilani's philosophy is rooted in a radical inspiration toward heritage, culture, community, and creativity. She views her work not merely as art, but as explicit advocacy and a social obligation. Coming from a lineage of traditional South African healers, she considers her voice a medium for spiritual repatriation and her music a technology for archiving vital cultural narratives.

Cultural Sovereignty:
Pilani actively works to use storytelling as a tool for reformist preservation, confronting the residual effects of systemic trauma, poverty, and gender-based violence.
Intergenerational Healing:
She believes the Folklore Community is essential for mending intergenerational cultural fractures and serving as a healing portal for the soul.
Authentic Sustainability: Operating under the guiding principle that "Authenticity is sustainability," she recognizes that deep, self-knowledgeable authenticity provides lasting viability.
Through her relentless dedication, Pilani Bubu has transitioned from being solely an artist performing folklore to a custodian actively building the necessary infrastructure for African identity to be transferred and sustained across generations.
